Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis: means a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one. Each relationship changes a person, each honest artistic creation changes the artist. There are things to shed and a new form to embrace.
An art installation from a book by Ganza Moise Curated by Sandra Heremans

Metamorphosis, is a series of arts installations that aim to showcase Ganza Moise’s creative
journey, through his art, experimenting with words, sounds and Images in a ‘living space’ which
is the connection with the daily intimacy where a romantic relationship is consumed and where
ultimately the absence of an imagined future is experienced. An experience that is crystallized in
the poetic collection ‘Letting go’, written processing a romantic breakup .

The intention is for the audience to experience the feelings connected to the phases in the
artistic process and the phases in a romantic relationship, through installation that evokes
infatuation, impasse, and letting go are experienced through the walk through the different
spaces of the house, and by the end of it, hopefully buy the poetry collection “Letting Go”.

Artist profile

Ganza Moise is a published writer and an award-winning filmmaker with more than 8 short films, some of them like Muzunga, Sukut, Limbo among others are dramatic narrative works, and others like Sensory Overload, “Injiji” are experimental. He’s the co-founder of KIRURI MFN, an independent production company based in Kigali. He is also the co-initiator and curator of 250 Film Experiment Cine-Club, a cine-club based in Kigali, Rwanda .

Theme: Letting go

Metamorphosis is centered around Ganza’s poetry collection. Like the case of a caterpillar Letting go of itself to grow wings, letting go is a crucial step, it is the determining factor, the cracking of the cocoon, in the process of transformation.

This is why the book is the central point of the experience in the installation. The book will be sold during the installation and on the artist’s website.

Curator's note

“People who remember court madness through pain, the pain of the perpetually recurring death of their innocence, people who forget court another kind of madness, the madness of the denial of pain and the hatred of innocence; and the world is mostly divided between madmen who remember and madmen who forget.”

Contemplating the curatorial purpose behind this experimental collaboration with the multidisciplinary artist, Ganza Moise, I found myself continually drawn to the words of James Baldin in his book ‘Giovanni’s room’.

This quote is on several levels a crystallization of what is described above. It’s the highlighting of a tension between acknowledging pain and denying it. Ganza’s artistic process mirrors this tension, shaping his work from internal struggles. The proposed book presentation, “Letting Go,” encapsulated this journey.

The installation, held in an intimate space, a living room akin to Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room, merges Ganza’s artistic medium with daily life. Through video installations and soundscapes, the viewer experiences the resonance of (fragmented) cinema in a living space. The curator’s challenge lies in bridging film and poetry, creating an immersive experience.

We organized different ‘trials’ and presented draft versions to receive feedback from the experiences of the audience.

The first trial, “work in progress,” on September 23rd, 2023, took place in a furnished home, and “Letting go” on February 22nd, 2024, took place in a gallery similar to an empty home.

The trial installations engage selected participants as active contributors. Rather than passive observers, they become part of the narrative, and can experience and make the themes of ‘letting go’ and ‘transformation’ resonate with their personal experience as well as with the
universality of these themes.
